“Life is the sum of all your choices.”

. -Albert Camus

Attention: Parents!

American author Napoleon Hill has wisely remarked, “No man can succeed in a line of endeavour which he does not like” and it’s very true, indeed.

All this studying and training is supposed to take your children somewhere, right?

But where is that?

You are doing all that you can to build your child’s life. This path goes through building their careers. You want them to find the work they will like and enjoy every moment of it.

But as happens in most of the cases, once your child finishes high schooling confusion sets in. There are innumerable career options, unsolicited advice is bombarded, wisdom is flaunted by many.

You understand that it is important to have a clear career path led our for your child. And it is always rewarding if the decisions are well informed.

One needs to be on the right career track coupled with an appropriate set of skills to flourish outright. However, deciding which career to opt for has, is and will always be a daunting task for many, especially young teenagers, who are faced with numerous career choices and are constantly bombarded with unsought, frivolous advice from virtually every one they meet in today’s world.

The best place from where young teens can solicit reliable career advice is their secondary schools. Undoubtedly, secondary school occupies an important place in a teenager’s life as many facets of his/her life are associated with it. His/her personality and ideology of life begins evolving there; he/she starts developing social skills and most importantly, a student’s knowledge bank expands at school.

It is at secondary school that a student confronts his/her very first career choice when in eighth grade he/she needs to decide between Science and Commerce subjects. A number of students pick specific subjects simply because their friends are opting for them while some decide according to their parents’ wishes. Only a few select subjects are based on their interests and that also without knowing if their preferred subjects would lead them to their desired careers or not.

This is precisely where career counselling comes in to help young students carve suitable futures.

Then your child is interested in so many things and fields and yet not sure to pick up a list of three choices. There are many complicated confusing questions.

Some courses plug really easily into a job, like Medicine or Hospitality, but others aren't so clear. What kind of work can your child get out of a Science degree or a Diploma in multimedia?

And even if the field your child chose does have a career path clearly laid out, how do you really know that what your child is studying is what he/she wants to do for a career? What if your child changed mind halfway through?

One of the best ways to answer these questions is to talk to a careers counsellor.

What Does a Career Counsellor Do?

When we start to think about jobs and careers most of us think of what our family and friends do for a living. One of the main things a career counsellor can help you do is ‘broaden your career awareness and make informed choices’. There are so many different studying and training options you might not even know that some of them exist.

A career counsellor will enable your child to discover himself clearly and plan for his/her career and make informed choices which will enable your child to realise his/her potential.

When Should I Speak to a Career Counsellor?

Ask any experienced counsellor and he/she will tell you that the best period is to start planning for career is when your child is in 8th Std. This is the time when the journey should begin.

Career counsellor will enable you to see into the future and see where your child’s path will take him/her. Your child’s future doesn't have to unfold accidentally or by fluke. It is actually possible to make your child’s future happen in the way you'd like to see it unfold.

We are pleased to tell you about a rewarding process for planning rewarding and enriching careers for your child. We are a team of experienced career counsellors. We have evolved a unique process of career discovery, planning and mentoring (CDPM)

Secondary school students need career counselling the most. This is because in secondary schools young students are introduced to a range of subjects they can select from, the colleges and universities they can go to and the professions they can enter. Parents need to discuss their conjectures about different subject combinations and describe to them what the job market looks like. They need to know which professions are in demand and which fields have saturated.

In secondary schools, career counselling largely revolves around students’ interests and skills to guide them to the most felicitous career path.

We shouldn’t expect absolute clarity and decisiveness from our high school students because as teenagers, they are still growing up. They need time and exposure to identify what they want to do with their lives. We need to encourage our students to talk about their favourite subjects and inform them about the most relevant professional choices that are available based on their interests.

We, as Career counsellors believe that secondary schools are the platforms where students explore, experiment and enhance their life skills. It is during adolescence that they learn to communicate and interact with diverse groups, acquire problem-solving skills, polish their critical thinking abilities and recognise the importance of teamwork. Therefore, counsellors suggest that secondary school students should be provided with appropriate career guidance so that they can make informed decisions about their higher and professional studies.

At this stage, our Career Counsellors recommend students to choose electives that are aligned with their subject preferences and proficiencies. Our Career counsellors also chalk out all possible career lines for the students, bringing a number of new and profitable professions in their knowledge.

Our teenage career counselling also addresses the dilemma of parents compelling their children to go for a career of their choice, ignoring their child’s aspirations and inclinations. Gratifying jobs is one of the most common reasons why parents want children to pick their desired line of profession. Parents need to look beyond some so-called “prestigious professions” and analyse where today’s recession-struck job market is heading. A number of new, lucrative professions are emerging and with the right education and competencies, our younger generation can easily attain employment.

Moreover, it is important that career counselling is taken as an on-going practice. Career planning is not a one-time event. It is an ongoing process. Managing your career is not a one-time decision but a series of decisions made over your lifetime.

After finishing highs school, a student is in a better position to determine whether he/she wants to advance in the same field or needs to change.

Career counselling needs to be treated as an integral part of the secondary schools as it can steer the youth of this country in the right direction. It can save the teens from undesirable career diversions and will help them focus on their chosen line of profession. After their secondary schooling we need to prepare our children for life. They need help to discover suitable futures for them.

We believe that children do not enter schools, they enter into a journey of future discoveries. The school counsellor’s role can be a crucial part of the student learning equation.

Also, mere finding career option is not enough we need to prepare them through coaching for these careers. Their progress needs constant evaluation and future improvements.

There are hundreds of careers and with new developments new career fields are emerging.

Right guidance, at right time from right people makes a great difference.
